Ace Hardware will actually let me buy the powder coated pipe for $2.79 a foot.If you don’t currently need a complete Slimline II tray mounted in your bed, but still want off-road rated, durable cargo space for a bicycle, roof top tent, kayak, or other adventure accessories, a Front Runner Load Bar Kit is the solution. Once I add an extension to the rack I will need 2 more towers and another 58" load bar. They look like they came straight from the factory, and they are sturdy. Here is a picture of the powder coated pipe and the bars mounted on my fj80. Mounting was simple, I just followed the factory rack directions with my hardware store load bars. When I got home I painted the pipe with some black Krylon paint I already had and let them dry for 2 hours. The price of this pipe was 21.99 plus tax for a 10' section and they would cut it to my specifications for free. When I tested the green coated pipe it fit perfectly into the tower and I was able to tighten it down enough that I couldn't move it at all. They carried the same galvanized pipe, however they also carried a galvanized pipe they called black pipe in schedule 40 that was powder coated green. I needed something with a slightly thicker OD. I tested the fit of galvanized pipe at my local Home Depot and I just couldn't get the tower tight enough for my liking. I took one of the towers with me and the search was on. After checking on the interweb I decided I needed at least schedule 40 and that the factory Yakima bars were galvanized with a vinyl coating. Well after watching several auctions go for well above $60 I started looking around for some 3/4" pipe. ![]() I purchased a set of 4 Yakima 1A towers on Ebay for $50 shipped, and started looking for a set of load bars to finish off the project. The next step was how to mount it to my Cruiser. So I have a Yakima Mega Warrior recently purchased from Craigslist for $150. ![]()
